For decades, visitors from all over the world have come to Salzburg to follow in the footsteps of The Sound of Music. Now, there is finally a place dedicated to the story behind the film.
Since 20 September 2026, the new Sound of Music Salzburg museum has welcomed visitors at Hellbrunn Palace – right next to the famous gazebo from the film.

From Salzburg to Hollywood
Few films have shaped the international image of Salzburg quite like The Sound of Music. Released in 1965, the Hollywood classic turned the city’s landscapes, gardens and historic buildings into scenery known around the world.
But the story began long before Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer arrived in Salzburg.
The new museum takes visitors back to the real story of the von Trapp family, following its journey from Maria von Trapp’s memoirs to the Broadway musical and, finally, the legendary Hollywood film.

More Than Just a Film
The exhibition explores both sides of the story: the historical reality of the von Trapp family and the international phenomenon that The Sound of Music became.
Spread across almost 700 square metres in the historic buildings at the entrance to Hellbrunn Palace, the exhibition combines photographs, film material, memorabilia and multimedia installations.
And then there is the setting itself.
Just next door stands the original gazebo, one of the most recognisable filming locations from the movie. The combination of museum and original film location makes the visit particularly special.

A New Chapter for a Salzburg Classic
The opening of Sound of Music Salzburg marks a new chapter in the relationship between the city and the film. For international fans, it offers a deeper look behind the scenes. For locals, it provides an opportunity to rediscover a story that has long been part of Salzburg’s cultural and tourist identity.
The museum is currently a seasonal attraction, with opening hours depending on the time of year. It is open daily during its 2026 season, with the current season running through 1 November.
Our Gentle Hide Tip
Combine the museum with a visit to Hellbrunn Palace and its gardens. Instead of seeing The Sound of Music simply as a collection of famous film locations, take the time to discover the history behind the story – and then step outside into the very landscape that made Salzburg part of cinematic history.
For anyone interested in The Sound of Music, Salzburg history or the von Trapp family, the new museum is one of the most exciting additions to Salzburg’s cultural scene in 2026.
